Makeup tips whilst wearing glasses
Glasses are no longer considered an unfashionable inconvenience you have to wear in order to see… You should never have to compromise looking the way you want to just to be able to see in your day-to-day life. If you really hate wearing glasses because it affects the way your makeup sits on your face, or you struggle to even apply the makeup in the first place because of poor vision… then you can opt for contact lenses. However, it's understandable if this isn’t something you are ready to try. Here’s a guide on how to apply makeup when only working with glasses to aid in your vision!
How to Apply Makeup When You Wear Glasses
1. Start with a good base
Clean and moisturise your face before applying anything. A light primer can help your makeup stay in place and stop it rubbing off where your glasses touch your nose and cheeks.
2. Give your eyes some definition
Glasses naturally draw attention to your eyes so a little definition goes a long way. Neutral shadows are easy to wear though you can add more colour if it works with your frames.
3. Keep your brows tidy
Your eyebrows sit just above your frames so they really help shape your look. Fill in any gaps with a pencil or powder then brush them through so they still look natural.
4. Adjust your eyeliner to your frames
Thin frames work well with a finer line while thicker frames can carry a slightly bolder eyeliner. A small wing lifts the eyes without making your makeup feel too heavy.
5. Curl your lashes
Curling your lashes helps prevent them from brushing against the lenses. Follow with a lengthening or waterproof mascara, focusing more on lift than heavy layers.
6. Brighten under the eyes
Frames can cast shadows making dark circles stand out. Use a small amount of creamy concealer and blend it well rather than applying a thick layer that may crease.
7. Keep foundation light around the nose
Heavy foundation can collect beneath the nose pads or transfer onto the frame. Use a lighter layer in these areas and add a small amount of powder to help it stay put.
8. Add colour without overdoing it
A little blush can stop your complexion looking flat behind your glasses. Apply it lightly to the cheeks. If you contour keep it soft so it does not compete with the frames.
9. Choose a lip colour that balances the look
Nude, pink and classic red shades can all work well. Think about the colour and weight of your frames when deciding how bold to go.
10. Use products that will stay in place
Long-wearing makeup is useful when you wear glasses. Waterproof mascara, a reliable eyeliner and setting spray reduce smudging and transfer during the day.
11. Let your frames guide the overall style
Clear or delicate frames leave more room for stronger eye makeup. Thick or colourful frames already make a statement so you may prefer a softer look around the eyes.
12. Check your makeup in different light
Look at the finished result with your glasses on and off. Natural light is best but it is also worth checking under indoor lighting since frames can create different shadows around your eyes.
13. Try using Make-up Glasses
These glasses allow you to see through one lens whilst flipping up the other lens to apply eye make-up - these can be particularly helpful if you have a strong prescription
When wearing makeup with glasses, the key is not to apply it too heavily otherwise you'll find the frame of your glasses can become imprinted into your makeup… enhance your natural features with makeup that suits your complexion and face structure! Sometimes it's trial and error with different kinds of the same products, for example, a liquid vs powder blush or opting for a BB cream for coverage rather than a heavy foundation, find what works for you to make application easier, look for products that can withstand your glasses having contact with your face and maybe products that don’t require too much precision without having to use your glasses (e.g. intricate eyeliner… unless you’re brave enough to just wing it!)
You should feel fabulous every day… glasses or no glasses!
